Sacral sights in Sopron

Benedictine, Goat Church - Main Square, opposite the Fire Tower

One of the few preserved Gothic churches in Hungary. Its peculiarity is the coronation church, where King Ferdinand III, two Hungarian queens were crowned and five Diets were held. Legend has it that St. John Capistrano preached here.

You can visit the church and chapel hall every day in winter from 8.00 to 16.00.

Church of St. George - St. George Street, City Centre

The Baroque church has the oldest church organ in the country, still in use today: the cabinet dates from 1753, while the instrument itself is even older, dating from 1633. The church's tower is not visible from St George's Street, only from the Castle District.

Lutheran Church - Downtown, Templom Street

The oldest of the four bells in the tower, the oldest of the four bells, the bell of loyalty, was the bell that on 16 December 1921 informed the inhabitants of the town and the country that Sopron remained part of Hungary as a result of the referendum.

St. Michael's Church - Poncichter quarter

Sopron's oldest parish church, the most prominent building of Hungarian Gothic architecture after the Matthias Church in Budapest. It is believed that King Matthias was present at its consecration. It is unique in that it is the only church in the country with such a continuous and large glazed tiled floor.
