Forest walks and attractions in Sopron

University Botanical Garden - University of Sopron, Bajcsy-Zsilinszky u. 4.

The park, now 100 years old, is a collection of living plants under nature conservation protection, which can be explored on thematic trails and walking paths.

In 1922, after the First World War, the Academy of Mining and Forestry, which had been forced to flee from the Selmec mines, moved into the vacant buildings of the Sopron Real School, and the present botanical garden was created in its park.

The trail is open to the public from 8.00 to 16.00.

Treasures of the Gunpowder Trail (2.5 km, 11 signposted, sealed, gravel path)

The trail runs from the Lőver Hotel bus turnaround to the Prinz rest area.

It is in fact a local history trail, with signposts explaining the fascinating history of Lőverek, its main attractions and points of interest. The walk will give you an insight into the origins of the word "Lőverek" and a glimpse into the lively daily life of the Lőverek at the turn of the century. You will discover the gun houses, the villas, the old crafts, sports and entertainment.

Várisi walking trail (length: 3km, easy circular walk at the foot of the Sopron woods)

The forest trail starts from the former Hotel Lövért, is perfectly maintained, with benches and small rest areas, a 2 km section of forest gymnastics track with a variety of equipment, and a historical monument to the Battle of Ojtozi.

Sopronbánfalva - Stairs of the Saints, Heroes' Cemetery (short walk)

The Staircase of the Monastery Hill (Staircase of the Saints) is a special attraction with its 14 statues of Catholic saints and resting terraces, a Baroque staircase most closely associated with the Palatines and monastic life. It leads up to the Queen of Heaven Church.

Nearby is perhaps the most beautiful cemetery of heroes in the country. In Sopronbánfalva, on the western side of the Alom hill, a stone's throw from the Pauline-Carmelite monastery, lies the almost two-hectare military cemetery, the resting place of heroes and victims of nearly twenty nations. The well-kept cemetery also contains special gravestones, well worth a stroll.

Game Management and Hunting Trail (length: 3.5 km, well-walkable)

The trail starts at the Charles the Huntsman car park and leads to the Forest House Ecotourism Visitor Centre. It is the first walking trail in the country to feature not only exciting interactive information panels but also practical wildlife management equipment. While you are here, be sure to visit the Forest House Visitor Centre.
